Customer journey analytics is the analysis of connected interactions across a person’s path, from an initial visit or campaign click to conversion, return visit, or exit. It helps you evaluate which touchpoints occur, in what order, how long steps take, and where people abandon the journey.
Use it when conversion totals tell you what happened but not why. It is especially useful for journeys with several pages, sessions, devices, or acquisition channels. It can reveal recurring detours, delayed decisions, weak transitions, and differences between converting and abandoned paths.
An attribution model assigns conversion credit to selected marketing interactions, such as the first or last channel. Journey analytics examines the complete observed sequence, including internal searches, product comparisons, repeat visits, form steps, and exits. Start with touchpoints tied to a clear decision: entry pages, content views, searches, product interactions, form steps, cart actions, purchases, and returns. Capture consistent Events, timestamps, session context, and consent status. Avoid collecting data simply because it is available; each event should support a defined question.
Choose one outcome, such as a purchase or completed form, and work backwards through the expected steps. Define each event consistently, segment relevant visitors, and set an appropriate observation period. Compare the planned route with actual paths instead of forcing every session into a single funnel.
Use path analysis and Smart Funnels to locate steps with frequent exits, loops, or unexpected transitions. Then inspect the affected segments with Session Replays or Heatmaps to look for unclear content, interaction problems, or repeated attempts.
